4 Fencing Options for Your Swimming Pool

Blog

If you install a swimming pool in your home, there are regulations that govern how you will protect the area to prevent accidents that could culminate in drowning, especially for younger children and pets. The type of fence that you choose isn't only important for compliance, it contributes to the curb appeal of your lot. Below are some of the options you have to choose from:

1. Glass fencing

You can choose between framed and frameless glass fences. Framed glass fences have glass panels supported by steel posts and top bars and are more ideal if you have children as they are more visible. Frameless fences create the illusion of lack of a fence and are made from very strong glass embedded into the ground and supported by steel pegs. The glass panels can be installed with small spaces between them (too small for children to squeeze through). They are ideal if you want to have a fence for compliance without obstructing your view of the pool and surrounding areas.

2. Aluminium fencing

This is popular choice that is both durable and elegant. Powder-coated aluminium fences are also affordable and are made of aluminium panels with pickets held together using screws or rivets. They are also low maintenance, which makes them highly attractive to many homeowners. However, they aren't the best option if you're looking to have some privacy around the pool. You can get them most commonly in green, white, bronze or black.

3. PVC fencing

This is a great option for privacy, durability and ease of maintenance. You can choose between standard fences and privacy-enhanced fences which has taller slats and posts, with spindles or lattices at the top to enhance aesthetic appeal. They are available mostly in white and tan, and you can get a manufacturer to adapt design, style and height at little or no extra cost. However, the rails and pickets are bulker than aluminium fences, and they are not suited for extremely wet areas, since they are prone to mildew formation.

4. Wooden fencing

Wooden fences are a long-used fencing option, though they have become less popular because of the high maintenance requirements. However, they are cheaper to install compared with any of the above-mentioned options and are great if you need privacy. They are also fully customizable in terms of style and size and can be painted or stained in any colour. Regular maintenance is necessary to prevent twisting and warping, although these may still happen as the fence ages and weathers.
