Pool Ideas to Explore for Homeowners Who Are Disabled

Blog

If you are disabled, swimming can be a great form of exercise. That applies to people with a range of different disabilities. Thinking about getting a pool for your home? To make it as enjoyable and helpful as possible, you may want to explore the following ideas.

Consider an Endless Pool

If space is limited, you may want to consider an endless pool. This is a small pool with a built-in current. When you turn on the current, you can swim against it, which is great for building upper body strength. However, you can also turn off the current and just use the pool for soaking.

Leave Room for a Pool Lift If Necessary

For people who are permanently in a wheelchair, getting in and out of the pool can be challenging. To make it easier, you may want a pool lift. That is basically a sling that you climb into, and the sling is connected to a rotating arm.

When you turn the arm, it swings you out over the pool and then slowly lowers you into the water. This can be an essential addition, especially if you want to be able to easily get into and out of the pool on your own.

Talk With a Pool Designer About a Roll-in Pool

If you use an old-school wheelchair that doesn't have electronic components, you may want to skip the lift and just roll into the pool. So that's possible, you need to talk with the pool designer about a pool that has a gradual slope.

Ideally, the slope should meet the edge of the pool. Then, it should gently slope downward toward the deep end of the pool. This only works for full-size pools, not endless pools.

Opt for a Saltwater Pool

Rather than a traditional chlorinated pool, you may want to opt for a saltwater pool. These pools use a small amount of chlorine as well as a strategic amount of salt to keep bacteria and germs a bay.

These pools are known to help reduce your stress levels. If you are trying to recover from an injury, the lowered stress levels can help you to heal more effectively.

Additionally, these pools are better on your joints. If you have arthritis or any condition that puts stress on your joints, a salt water pool can help to relax them.

Look Into an Extra Powerful Pool Heater

If you have arthritis or are dealing with a number of musculoskeletal issues, it can help to swim in a pool with therapeutic hot temperatures. Most pool heaters aren't designed to bring a large pool to therapeutic temperatures.

So that's possible, you may want to invest in an extra powerful heater. Note that it is not safe for all people to swim in extra hot pools. For instance, if you are pregnant or have a history of heart problems, that may not be the right option for you.

Invest in the Right Accessories

In addition to the ideas explored above, you may want to invest in some additional accessories. For instance, some people get a special pool access chair. That is a simple hand-powered wheelchair made of PVC pipe with a mesh seat. If you have that, you can move from your regular wheelchair into that chair and then wheel yourself into your pool.

You may also want an underwater pool walker. That can be useful for stroke victims who are trying to walk again. It lets you practice, but you still benefit from the lessened weight that you feel in the water. Your healthcare provider or swimming pool builder may be able to suggest additional ideas to you.
